What were your inspirations for the most disgusting parts of the novel?
Having Graves’ disease, I deal with nausea and food aversion a lot. My medication (anti-thyroid drug) causes a decreased appetite, and when I’m hyperthyroid (my metabolism is z o o m i n g ) I am constantly hungry but not necessarily mentally hungry, if you see what I mean. Oftentimes I’m eating out of survival or necessity because I’m starving, but mentally I’m not craving anything. Mentally I’m done eating. Imagine forcing yourself to eat while having food poisoning. Eating while nauseous sucks and it inspired a lot of the food scenes in MUKBANG.
Also, having OCD, I have a hard time eating at restaurants. I’ve gotten over this paranoia a bit, but I still have fears that I’ll find a maggot in my burrito…
What’s your favorite quote in the book?
My favorite piece of imagery in the whole book:

Mia thrusted her hands out in a shrug. “What am I supposed to do? Say no so you can scream at me?”
“I do not scream at you!” he roared.
“You’re doing it right now!” she fired back, whipping the pistol from behind her back and aiming it at his forehead.
She imagined blowing the top right off his head, certain ice cream would splatter the wall. That’s all he was made of: sugar and fat—like some fucked up kid’s worst nightmare and sweetest dream combined, a zombie made of food. Chocolate sauce would ooze from his shattered scalp, running into his eyes and mouth. His tongue would circle his lips to get a taste before dying.
“FUCK!”
She squished her eyes closed, taking deep breaths. Opening them, she said, “We’re doing the video, and we’re doing it now.”
