Sparkly Teeth by Alyanna Poe

Sparkly Teeth by Alyanna Poe

I was nineteen, with a petite waist and long brown hair. My boyfriend, John, who was headed off to college soon, had just broken up with me in front of my friends. I couldn’t bear to be in my room anymore, crying and looking at pictures of him. Peering out my window, pouting my perfect lips, the woods just beyond my parent's house were calling to me.

So I ran.

I ran into the trees, leaving my shoes and cellphone inside. I was nature’s now.

I danced under falling leaves and climbed giant trees, sprawling out onto branches to bask in the sparse sunlight.

But soon night came. The darkness was swift, blanketing the woods without so much as a warning.

I carefully walked through the night, my hands and feet cold. The feeling of being watched was strong, making my heart thud in my chest. I desperately wanted to be home but couldn't figure out up from down.

I was lost.

And something in the shadows knew that.

As I trudged through bushes and shrubs, a bat flew close to my face, making me scream. I swatted at it, losing my balance. Little did I know, I was next to a cliff. My foot caught nothing but air and my heart leapt into my throat as I began to fall, but—

A hand caught my arm, easily carrying me up to safety.

I was wrapped in someone’s strong arms, a powerful, smokey scent tingling my senses.

“You must be careful, playing in the woods.”

His voice was deep, foreign.

I clutched him, looking over the edge I’d almost fallen over. The moonlight illuminated a fifty-foot drop. I would’ve died had this stranger not caught me.

“Thank you so much,” I said. I wanted to pull away, to see his face, but something deep in my chest kept my arms around him.

He rubbed my back with his big hands.

“It is no problem, young lady.” He pushed me back, peering into my face. His eyes faintly glowed, frightening me, and when he smiled, the moonlight glinted off long, sharp teeth.

“You have sparkly teeth,” I said.

They glittered like the stars.

“Yes, they are made with real diamonds.”

“Is it a grill?”

He chuckled. “Yes.”

I pushed him away from me. “So, you’re not a vampire?” I was disappointed to say the least.

“Rebecca!”

It was John. He ran toward us from a distant group of trees.

In a tornado of bats, the stranger flew into the night, enveloping John. He screamed, tearing at the bats, until they became one figure at his side. The looming man bent down, gripping John by the chin. John stood very still, his eyes aglow as he stared into the stranger's gaze. He exposed his throat to him, and the man revealed his great glittering teeth which penetrated John's throat with ease.

Silently, the stranger drank John's blood.

I watched, both in horror and excitement as revenge was enacted before my eyes.

John slumped to the ground, and that was when the icy spear of terror shot through my chest.

I turned to run, but the stranger was on me in seconds.

He was handsome up close, with a strong jaw and dark hair. Almost the polar opposite of John.

“Do not fret. He is not dead, but he will not remember tonight.” He grabbed my hand and kissed it gently. “But tonight could be unforgettable for you, my love.”

His sparkling teeth glimmered with blood as he smiled at me.

I felt the tingling of hot excitement rush through my body, until a question came to mind.

“How old are you?” I asked.

“Two-thousand-five-hundred-sixty-four,” he said with a smirk.

“Ew!” I said, pushing him away from me.

I trudged through the night, hoping to find my way home. Calling back to the stranger who remained where I left him, I said, “A two-thousand-five-hundred-forty-five year age gap?! That's disgusting!”

And I made my way home and slept soundly in bed without a man on my mind.
